Healthy Eating Tip: Make the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

Hope Warshaw

In honor of National Nutrition Month®, my colleague Hope Warshaw shares her tips to help you savor the flavor of eating right.

Make the healthy choice the easy choice

  1. Shop regularly. Keep healthy foods in stock and at-the-ready to eat. A practice I use to help my family eat more fruit and salads is to keep them cut and ready. When it comes to fruit, I chop oranges, apples, mangos and more and store them in a plastic container. It makes our bowls of fruit topped with Greek yogurt a quick fix in the morning. As for eating more salads, I make up a container of what I’ve nicknamed “salad accessories” – typically it’s red cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, red onion, celery and more. When I want to assemble salads, I take the container of mixed greens and the salad accessories out – and voila, salads. Simple and easy.
  2. Have the ingredients for 3 to 5 quick to fix favorite healthy meals in stock so you can always come home and pull off dinner.
  3. Make extras of easy-to-freeze dishes, and stash a meal or two in the freezer.
  4. When it comes to sweets, don’t deprive yourself. Enjoy only the most delicious ones in small amounts. Savor every morsel of their flavor!
