Healthy Eating Tip: Work with Your Picky Eating Style

Janis RoszlerIn honor of National Nutrition Month®, my colleague Janis Roszler is sharing her tip to help you savor the flavor of eating right.

Is “Eating Right” Beyond Your Reach?

It’s National Nutrition Month®, a time when many people focus on making healthier food choices. But what if you are a picky eater? What if you are an adult who can’t try new foods no matter how beneficial experts say they might be?

According to Bob Krause, founder of pickyeatingadults.com, there are thousands of individuals around the world who struggle with food selection. There isn’t a lot of research on adults with less flexible eating habits, but some researchers believe that their challenges can be traced back to an early heightened sensitivity level and/or to the way foods were introduced to them when they were young. Adult picky eaters may also have parents who focused too intently on their food intake or punished them when they didn’t eat as expected.

  • First, visit pickyeatingadults.com and connect with others who also struggle with their food intake. It’s nice to know that you aren’t alone and might even find their support helpful.
  • Next, try a healthier version of a food you already eat. For example, if you like French fries, give a baked potato a try; it is made from the same vegetable, but contains far fewer calories and fat.

And don’t forget to take a moment during this month to appreciate the nutritional value of the foods you already eat.

Enjoy!
