Healthy Eating Tip: Go Meatless Once a Week

Vicki Shanta RetelnyTotal Body Diet for Dummies

In honor of National Nutrition Month®, my colleague Vicki Shanta Retelny shares two tips to help you savor the flavor of eating right.

Color your health happy by planning at least one meatless day into your week. Enjoy plant proteins, such as beans, peas, lentils, tofu, soybeans, red and brown quinoa, and nuts and seeds. Accompany them with colorful veggies like artichokes, beets, red onion, leafy greens, and zucchini and fruits such as apples, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, clementines and red grapefruits.

Beat mindless eating by taking your time when eating meals and snacks (it takes about 20 minutes to completely feel fullness). Savor your food, and don’t eat while doing other things, such as watching TV, reading, working on your computer or driving on your car.

Vicki Shanta Retelny, RDN, The Lifestyle Nutritionist, is a speaker, freelance writer and nutrition consultant in Chicago.  Her latest book is Total Body Diet For Dummies (Wiley, 2016).  She blogs at Simple Cravings. Real Food.
